bungee jumping of their own (2001)

Kim Dae-seung’s bungee jumping of their own is one of those movies that stays in your mind long after you have seen it, even though its impact might not be that strong. Definitely it is not a movie for everyone. But, somehow, the deepness hidden behind the silly title will be remembered by many, more than the title itself.
Seo In-woo (Lee Byung-hun) and In Tae-hee (Lee Eun-ju) fall in love at first sight while sharing his umbrella on their way to the bus stop on a rainy day. Their love is true and soon after that they realize they are meant to be together forever. Seventeen years later, In-woo is a husband, a father, and a high school teacher, and Tae-hee is gone. Is she really gone? In-woo starts to see her in one of his seventeen years old male students.
The story deals with love as an essential feeling. Love free of rules and directives. Thus, homosexuality and heterosexuality become one. Love between people, that it is, between their souls, if you wish, independent of gender and any other label you might think about. Dae-seung is able to deliver a message that most people are not ready to consider, as many as those who does not even care about, those who actually shoud skip this one. A message that places itself on a particular line of thought, close to oriental philosophies and religions. A message that thorough the movie makes it both shine and escape notice. Some brilliant shots as the one the couple share at the edge of a cliff share the screen with a few cheesy dispensable ones.
The cast, without being outstanding, manages to make believable something with many ingredients that have more to do with faith than anything else. Actually, they succeed at erasing the idea from our minds that the movie will turn into a comedy at any time. This idea arises from both the treatment this kind of plots usually receive in Hollywood and the particular acting of the cast, particular for most of us, usual for those familiar with South Korean productions.
All in all, a movie about essential feelings, those that still survive within ourselves free of prejudices. Feelings that manifest themselves only every now and then to, sadly in most cases, just be ignored.
For the deadhours of those who believe on one true love that begins with a kiss under the rain.
