interview (2007)

Something similar has probably been done before. That is a true statement for most movie plots nowadays. On top of that, a lot of remakes are being made, most of them for the sake of business. Remakes of old movies, movies made somewhere else, and both. Some people use the word tribute. interview is the remake of the dutch movie interview (2003) and let me start saying that I doubt Steve Buscemi was thinking about business when he decided to re-write, re-direct and re-produce the remake. It was probably more like he liked the original movie directed by Theo van Gogh so much that decided to make his own and dedicate it to Theo, who was shot by a Muslim extremist in 2004.
Not having enough with writing, directing, and producing it, Steve Buscemi also plays the role of Pierre Peders. Pierre is a fading political journalist that against his will, will find himself interviewing at her place a soap opera celebrity (Sienna Miller) more famous for who she sleeps with and the size of her tits than for her acting career.
It is been more than ten years since Steve Buscemi directed his first of four movies so far, trees lounge (1996), he plays in around five per year being one of the most prolific actors around. And there might be a reason for that, he is in love with acting, that is something one can tell when watching him on the screen. The script was already there and as a director he does not put himself at risk. Long shots, a camera that dances with the characters at times, smooth succession of sequences, all together techniques that are known to work well in a real time movie which is closer to theater than to cinema. Steve Buscemi is a synonymous of independent cinema and that is what he delivers, something that is certainly not for everyone and can be enjoyed by the small rest of them at home.
The whole dramatic weight of the movie relies on both Steve Buscemi and Sienna Miller. Although at the beginning he is able to pretend he is not, Buscemi plays the character he is famous for, and he does it as good as always. He is type-casted and he knows, so does not waste time trying to hide the evidence. At least he is sickly amusing at what he does, he is always able to smoothly perform the twists of his characters. Unfortunately, Sienna Miller’s performance, although worthy, falls under the shadow of a more experienced actor. She definitely deserve an applause for her performance, overacted at times, but overall convincing as a celebrity that could perfectly be Paris Hilton’s cousin.
The movie has ups and downs, as any other conversation between two strangers, and despite the sick twists it has towards the end and a couple of unexpected, and absolutely absurd incidents, it somehow works. Where is that sexual tension coming from? The characters might seem a little bit too intense, but that is why the movie is about their interaction and not about the one I had with the greengrocer yesterday. Other than that their two ways interview is full of their past, their present, their future, sorrow, regret, wit. It must be true that sometimes it is easier to talk to a stranger.
We all have that friend that whenever he makes a point and realizes it, instead of finish it, he recreates himself and goes on and on. For those wondering, Steve Buscemi is not that friend, and in less than an hour and a half he is done with his point and moving right along.
For the deadhours of those who google-stalk people.
